How can cancer develop in really healthy people taking good care of themselves?

Q. A heavy smoker can develop lung cancer because of harmful chemicals overtime to his lungs. But sometimes, lung cancer can develop in a nonsmoker's lung. Or breast cancer can develop in a healthy woman's body.

Don't get me wrong. I know that healthy people are much less likely to get cancer. However, sometimes cancer can develop in healthy people.

A. We all possess a gene for cancer. Even scientist don't know why some get it nd others don't. Cancer cells don't care how young you are or how healthy you are. If it manifest itself, then it will. Its almost like they have a mind of their own. My sister-in-law never smoked, always ate well and at 33 developed breast cancer which later traveled to her lungs and killed her. it is no respecter of anyone. My own sister never smoked either. In fact she's the only one who didn't. She developed breast cancer and 15 yrs later got brain cancer. No one knows why, we can only hope that scientist can pin point the whys someday. Be blessed

What exactly is cancer and how does it start?
Q. How does cancer start in your skin?

A. Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of a cell or cells having a negative effect. It basically means that a cell gets very sick and starts making the cells around it sick, too. A multitude of things cause it: viruses, hormones, toxic chemicals, the sun.

What is the best cancer prevention you can recommend?
Q. Cancer runs all over my family and I want to provide my family with the best chance of prevention.. as a mom and as a wife. What cancer prevention tips do you have? Look for Food, Herbs, General Health tips etc. Thanks!

A. If the cancer that's running all over your family is the exact same cancer, then you just have to be diligent in your check ups. If it's random types of cancers, the best you can do is eat healthy, exercise healthy, be happy and hope for the best.

@ Harvey Milk. we all know how to answer a question we got reported for. You'll just keep getting reported.

What are the best weight loss and muscle building supplements that work?

Q. What are the weight loss and muscle building supplements or drinks or pills to take that really work?!? Please help!

A. None of them are approved by any medical or dietary organization because they just don't work. Except for making money for the sellers.
80% of weight loss is diet.
You can eat a healthy diet and lose weight.
You can eat a healthy diet and exercise and lose more weight.
You can exercise and eat a poor diet and not lose and even gain weight.
A good healthy diet high in fiber, lean meats, eggs, complex carbohydrates, whole grains, antioxidant foods, healthy beverages and low in added sugar and salt help people lose weight, lower cholesterol, increase energy, improve brain function, lower blood pressure, reduce cancer risk and have a more positive lifestyle!
You need to eat a lot more food and a lot more fiber!
Diets that exclude foods from any food group are fad diets and do not lead to permanent weight loss or solve any other health issues.
First, try to kick your fiber intake to 40 grams of both soluble and insoluble fiber.
Whatever you do, get your fiber from your food, not from a jar.
Fruits and vegetables have good fiber in them. A high fiber diet increases the metabolism.
Try a breakfast cereal with at least 20% of recommended daily allowance of fiber in it. They are usually low in sugar so there is a double benefit. Blueberries or raspberries on top add more fiber and antioxidants. But fresh or frozen, not the kind in syrup. Oatmeal with berries or a bit of fresh honey is also good.
Raw nuts are a great source of fiber, healthy fats, and antioxidants. Avocados are the best.
Lots of beans, peas, and grains are high fiber. Whole grain breads. Fiber kicks up the metabolism so you actually burn more calories. These foods will give you more gas in the beginning but if eaten daily, the bacteria in the digestive tract will elevate lowering the gas output.
This will get you on the path for a healthy daily bowel movement. This helps clean the system and aids healthy digestion. A high fiber diet reduces transit time - the amount of time it takes food from when it is eaten to when it is expelled. This reduces toxicity in the system both from internally produced, ingested, and external toxins.
I know it goes against everything you've heard or read but eating lots of the right foods will actually help you lose weight!
Next, take an age appropriate basic daily multivitamin. Don't look at your multivitamin as nutrition but more as an insurance policy. Think of it as filling in the gaps in your daily diet as opposed to a primary source of nutrients.
You have to drink lots of water to be healthy. But you can disguise it. Fill your glass all the way full with ice before pouring low sugar beverages. Try iced green tea with a splash of orange juice in it for sweet. More antioxidants. Add lemon juice to water for flavor. Slice up a cucumber and float it in pitcher of water. Gives it salty fresh taste. But you must drink up to 100 oz of water daily to help your body get rid of waste and the natural toxins.
Last, you need to get 8-9 hours of quality sleep depending on your age. All recent sleep studies report a connection between poor sleep patterns and weight gain. This includes going to bed as close to the same time every night including weekends. Most of us stay up late Friday and Saturday night and it throws us off.
You must combine a healthy diet with exercise to multiply the benefit. Whether an hour a day in the weight room or just a 30 minute brisk walk every day, the added benefit of a regular exercise program really do increase and accelerate healthy weight loss.

I lost 30 pounds in 5 months by spending my money at the grocery and gym and have kept it off for over two years. Less than 3% of people that attempt weight loss lose it and keep it off for two years. It is not easy. It is a lifestyle change.
Good luck and good health.

What is the best way to judge a weight loss competition?
Q. I am starting a weight loss competition between friends and need to know the best way to decide the winner since all of us have a different amount of weight we wish to lose.

A. There are different ways you can judge this competition.
For instance, you can all give an amount of weight you need to lose (your goal weight) it could be 10lbs, 20LBS, 30lbs, in a certain period of time.
whoever loses the more % of weight and is able to reach the desired goal (or pass it) is the winner.

Another way is, since all of you guys are going for weight loss, you can check the body fat % lost and decide the winner according to who lost the most body fat %.

You can also have 2 prices according to the two guidelines stated above.

Happy competition!
Have fun!

How are illegal immigrants getting free health care?

Q. I heard in a lot of debate about illegal immigrants and how they care free services such as health care. I became a U.S citizen two years ago and I've been trying to find cheaper and quality health care, but I couldn't. I researched free health care online, but can't find it. I don't have health insurance, so whenever I visit the doctor, I either pay upfront if it's about $200 or they send me the bills if its way higher. So how are illegal immigrants getting free health care?

A. First off, illegal aliens are not immigrants. Immigrants follow laws. They get free health care by not paying bills when going to emergency rooms, giving false names and addresses etc... It also cost American taxpayers over $6000.00 per birth for each anchor baby born. That is if there are no complications.

In a recent year in Colorado, the state's emergency Medicaid program paid an estimated $30 million in hospital and physician delivery costs for about 6,000 illegal immigrant mothers - average of $5,000 per baby. Those 6,000 births to illegal aliens represent 40% of the births paid for by Medicaid in Colorado. Those 6,000 babies immediately became U.S. citizens and qualified for full Medicaid services, with a cost yet to be tabulated.

The federal Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) mandates that U.S. hospitals with emergency-room services must treat anyone who requires care, including illegal aliens. Medical service for Americans in affected communities is being severely damaged as hospitals absorb more than $200 million in unreimbursed costs. Some emergency rooms have shut down because they cannot afford to stay open. Local tax-paying Americans are either denied medical care or have to wait in long lines for service as the illegals flood the facilities. In California, the losses are calculated to be about $79 million, with $74 million in Texas, $31 million in Arizona, and $6 million in New Mexico.

These costs are staggering. The Cochise County, Arizona Health Department spends as much as 30 percent of its annual $9 million budget on illegal aliens. The Copper Queen Hospital in Bisbee, Arizona, has spent $200,000 in uncompensated services out of a net operating budget of $300,000. The University Medical Center in Tucson may lose as much as $10 million and the Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, also in Tucson, has lost $1 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2002.
__________________________________________________
ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION HEALTHCARE COSTS AFFECT YOU!
Published 06/01/2010 - CST By Elizabeth Lee Vliet, M.D.

In both Tucson and Dallas where I have practiced medicine, hospitals are struggling under massive costs of uncompensatedmedical services for uninsured people who, by federal law, cannot be turned away for lack of insurance or ability to pay.

How much does this uncompensated care actually cost taxpayers? The incredible answer: no one knows.

We only have estimates of the costs to taxpayers to treat illegal immigrants because hospitals and public health clinics do not ask for proof of citizenship before providing care.

What are consequences to taxpaying citizens?

1. Increased cost and reduced access to trauma care. Tucson has lost all but one Level I Trauma Center to serve all of southern Arizona, in large part due to massive, unsustainable losses from uncompensated care. Auto accidents involving overloaded vans of illegal aliens happen regularly in southern Arizona. Injured are flown by air ambulance to University Medical Centers Trauma Center and treated with state of the art care.all at taxpayer expense.

2. A registered nurse involved with the Pima County health system since the 1970s who must remain anonymous because of her role, said she has never seen any staff member at either El Rio Clinic or Pima County Health Department ask for proof of citizenship before providing free medical services (immunizations, Well Baby checks, food stamps, WIC services, birth control, and even elective abortions). Costs are paid by taxpayers. When funds are depleted, low income American citizens have fewer services and longer waits as a result.

3. This same RN also said: I personally know Mexican men who married 16 year old girls, got them pregnant, brought them to Tucson for the baby to become a US citizen. They livein Mexico but come here for their health care. Taxpayers pay for this medical care many ways, at the Public Health Department, and with school nurses who provide care.

4. Uncompensated medical services for illegal immigrants mean higher premiums for all of us due to cost shifting among all third party payers. To cover the deficits from free medical services they provide, the administration at University Physicians Health System Kino campus is analyzing how much to increase employeehealth insurance premiums as of July 1.

5. Obamacare cuts benefits to American citizens: $500 billion in Medicare cuts and slashing the Medicare Advantage program. Medicare Advantage, chosen by one in five seniors, is the most popular plan for low and moderate income seniors, and covers about half of our Hispanic or African-American elderly. My patients on Medicare have worked and paid into the system over their working careers, yet these cuts mean less healthcare available to them now. We certainly cannot afford to cover those here illegally.

6. Hospitals in Tucson and Dallas also provide uncompensated (free) maternity services to pregnant women here illegally. Their babies then become US citizens entitled to all of the services available for low income American families food stamps, WIC, immunizations, office visits, medications, etc. This drives up costs to all of us: higher premiums for private insurance companies, and higher taxes for government insurance like Arizonas Medicaid (AHCCCS).

7. Professional estimates are that over halfof the pregnant women served at Parkland Hospital in Dallas are in this country illegally. With over 16,000 deliveries a year, Parkland is one of the nations busiest maternity services with prenatal clinics for low income women to receive free prenatal care, nutrition, medication, birthing classes, child care classes, and free supplies (formula, diapers, bottles, car seats). Taxpayers pay the bills.

How is Obama going to pay for the so called free health care?
Q. Are they going to still more money out of social security like they have done in the past to start give away programs, plus fight three little wars,
shouldn't they be made to put this money back before they ask for more money to give every one so called free health care?
Or will they increase the peoples taxes to pay for the free health cars. and if they get the free health care passed and get it paid for through taxes and the funds start building up, will they still this money to use for other things?

A. A. Good god, man, learn how to spell.

B. Obviously, you haven't read the bill. He has repeatedly said how it will be paid for. If you don't want to listen, I can't help you.
C. No one is suggesting free health care.
D. Why did you NEVER ask how BOTH wars were being paid for, how free, universal health care for all Iraqis and Afghans was being paid for, how tax cuts to the rich were being paid for, how Medicare Part D was being paid for?

How do I go about getting free health care while Im pregnant?
Q. I need to get free health care, how do i do that?

A. In my state the Human Services Department (ie Medicaid) is the place to apply. The income limit for pregnancy related medicaid is a lot higher than for regular medicaid. For example I made too much money to qualify for regular medicaid but for pregnancy I qualified and my child qualified at birth. All of my prenatal care was free as well as the birth and follow-up. Find out where to apply for medicaid and do it as soon as possible just in case it takes a while.

How in anyway is Free Health Care unconstitutional?
Q. Serious were in the US constitution does it say no free health care? I want to know?

A. Who said there was going to be free health care.

What would be the definition of health from a preschooler, school-aged child, adolescent, young adult, middle?

Q. I know health definitions differs from person to person.

A. I wonder if a preschooler can define health, it could be ' being strong and not having fever'.
School going may say,' Absence of any disease.'
Adolescents/ young adults - ' A state of well-being is health.'
Adult- (proper definition)- A state of physical, mental & social wellbeing is health, not merely absence of any disease'.
Hope it helps.

What are good study techniques for these subjects?
Q. Exams are this week, and I need to study but I need some good study techniques for these subjects:

1. Spanish (Vocab and grammer)
2. Health (Mainly definitions, but also procedures)
3. English (Vocab, Mythological words, stories)
4. History (Dates, events, important people...)

I've already started flashcards for Spanish, but if you could give me any other studying techniques that would be awesome. Thanks!

A. For history and health look at your criteria or rubrics and make notes for it, read over the notes again and again until it is stuck in your head. For spanish use flash cards and the notes technique. For english read over your note book and text book and try to really learn the techniques because that is the most important thing in english

What is the definition of republican and the definition of democrat?
Q. Look up these definitions in a dictionary... Which definition really means what you are?

A. 1. republican adj. (\ri-p-bli-kn\)-
An individual who believes that the white male Christian God should be the only object of worship on the planet, that power and wealth should remain in the hands of 1% of the world's population while the remaining 99% starve, that health care should be privatized so the poor can't afford basic medication, that a rape victim living on welfare should be forced to care for a baby she didn't even ask for, and that America is the only real country on Earth while all those other countries they read about are just fakes invented by communists...oh wait, it's terrorists now, isn't it?

2 democrat (dm'-krt')-
1. One belonging to the United States Democratic Party

2. Tend to believe that government should come to the aid the most disadvantaged in society (see Unemployment Insurance, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security). We don't bring it up much, but it's what Jesus taught.

3. Belive in the separation of church and state, on the off-chance that not everyone in America is a Southern Baptist.

4. Doesn't believe that industries have the unfettered right to dump carcinogens into our water supplies. Also believe in protecting public health and worker safety.

5. Believe in strengthening public education, rather than gutting it with vouchers.

6. Belive in civil liberties and equal rights for all people, regardless of gender, race, or sexual orientation; a Democratic President pushed through the Civil Rights Act even though it meant losing half of his party. That half, comprising mostly of racist whites, now overwhelmingly votes Republican.

7. Most have actually read the 9th amendment. Can also spell "amendment."

8. Represent broadest spectrum of the American public: women, blacks, Latinos, gays, Jews, seculars, immigrants, union workers, and yes, also straight middle-class white male Protestants like me.

Should we all start to fight for human rights one of which is the free health care?

Q. Please don't tell us about the free stuff. We are not talking free cars, food, etc. We are talking about CARE - free health care which deserves every human on the planet Earth who works for the society.

A. I read a lot of angry responses here. There are very few answers to the question, Should we all start to fight for human rights...."

We cannot give up on better health care, a better system, and more care for the poor. Don't kick them in the street, find a way. If my doctor is making 450,000 dollars a year, he isn't going to get any sympathy from me. Sure he should be paid. Sure he should be able to make a good living. But, should a doctor be wealthy just because he can get away with it? Does anyone need to be that rich from working only in his office all week and not doing surgery?

If they really wanted to be a doctor, then ok...you are! Quit complaining. If you just wanted to be rich, then be a bank robber! You won't need medical school.
Be happy with that and live on $150,000 per year. Most of your patients would commit crimes to make that much in a year!

Let's get some ideas from a country that has already passed us up in health care quality, emergency care and affordable hospitalization.

What would happen if everyone in America had free health care just like Canada?
Q. I need your help,i am writing a report on what would happen if America had free health care. Can you guys give me a good conclusion? I already have 3 and a half pages. I just need a good conclusion. What would happen if everyone in America had free health care?

A. The most obvious result would be that we save a lot of money.

In 2006, per-capita spending for health care in Canada was US$3,678; in the U.S., US$6,714. The U.S. spent 15.3% of GDP on health care in that year; Canada spent 10.0%.

Do American immigrants get free health care in Canada?
Q. I plan on moving there, and I'm planning budgets. But I know that Canadians have free health care. Do immigrants get to utilize this as well?

A. Yes they do. But not everything is free! If you are in the hospital, you don't get semi-private or private rooms for free, ambulance is not free, plus in most provinces, you must pay a premium for your health card. Drugs are not free, unless there's some kind of low income program offered by provincial government. Check out the Ministry of Health government websites for each province in addition to Health Canada, And Immigrations Canada

What's the difference between free education and free health care?
Q. With all this talk about reforming health care, I hear a lot of people talking about not wanting to pay for other's health care and about how free health care isn't a right. Don't we use a tax-based system for education or am I missing something? What's the difference?

A. $10,500,000,000,000

Under the new federal health care act is a single man required to purchase maternity leave coverage?

Q. As of March 29, 2010, is a single man required to purchase maternity leave coverage as a clause or part of his private health insurance plan?

A. "maternity leave" is not the subject of health insurance it is instead covered by a short term disability policy. You are not mandated to purchase disability insurance, at least, not yet.

Where does McCain get his ideas about what healthcare is like today?
Q. He said the democrats want to put a bureaucrat between us and our docotors. Well I have a very good private health insurance plan and I just spent this afternoon talking to one of their bureaucrats who thinks my kid doesn't need any more physical therapy even though her surgeon says she does.

How out of touch can the Republicans get?
What planet do you people live on. I have only one chose of health insurance plan - the one my employer offers. I have had other insurance plans through other employers and it was always the same.

A. >>Well I have a very good private health insurance plan and I just spent this afternoon talking to one of their bureaucrats<<

Theoretically, you could switch to another private health insurance company. If there is only one company -- the government -- where are you going to go if they think your kid doesn't need more physical therapy? And what if it is like Canada, where private services are illegal so you can't even pay out of your own pocket to have your daughter treated? Will you have to take her out of the country, like Canadians do?

How Do I Get Health Insurance?
Q. I'm thinking of leaving my job to go freelance in California. I have no idea where to even start to look for a private health insurance plan. Could using insurance to pay for eating disorder therapy have long-term consequences in my health record?
Q. I am considering therapy to treat my eating disorder which I've had for a few years, never diagnosed. I recently applied for and was accepted to a private health insurance plan. I'm wondering if anyone's had experience using their health insurance for any kind of mental treatment, only to find that years later (or even in the short term) there are severe consequences for having that kind of mark on your record?

A. It can cause issues. I work in a substance abuse facility, and I have heard many stories of people who lose the policy that they had utilized for substance abuse treatment- and then they are unable to get a new policy. Insurance companies consider clients to be high risk if they have any documented history of substance abuse, suicide attempt(s), an eating disorder (we treat that here too) or alcohol abuse. If you keep the same insurance carrier through out your life it may never affect your coverage, but if for some reason you at some point need to purchase a new policy, it will be difficult.
Of course, the same thing could happen if you have documented treatment for heart disease or cancer or something, it isn't that they single out people with a psychiatric illness.

is it possible for bacteria inside an organism to survive outside the organism?

Q. I am planning to research a bacteria in mealworms that allows them to digest polystyrene (Styrofoam). If I take the bacteria out of the mealworm, will they die?

A. From what I learned, yes, the bacteria living inside a cell does not usually survive long unless you mimic the exact environment of the inside of the cell. Some cells can survive outside of their natural habitats but not for long usually.

What are 2 types of good bacteria and 5 types of bad bacteria?
Q. I need 2 good bacteria and what they do that makes them good and 5 bad, and what they do to make them bad.

A. Depends on what you mean by "good" and "bad"? For example, E. Coli are a bacteria that live in all human intestinal tracts, and even on human skin. They help us extract nutrients by breaking down certain hard to digest foods. Yet, you hear all the time about E. Coli poisoning people from tainted meat. So, that is an example of a bacteria that may be "good" or "bad". That said, here are my picks:

Bad:

Streptococci-cause strep throat
Menegococci-cause menengitis
Pnuemococci-cause pneumonia
Staphylococci-cause staph infections and blood poisoning
Claustridia Botulinum-cause botulism
Salmonella-cause food poisoning

Good:
Lactobacillus-acid forming bacteria used to flavor many foods, including yogurt.
Streptococcus (again)-provides acidity to cheddar cheese.

What are some reasons why bacteria is beneficial to the human body?
Q. I've always known that some bacteria are harmful and others are beneficial, but I never knew how they are beneficial. I got curious enough to ask.

Just kidding this is so I don't get marked down on this question on my biology worksheet.

A. bacteria are beneficial because they keep our immune systems tuned to resist harmful bacteria, benign bacteria populate our skin, nostrils, vagina, etc. displacing those bacteria that can be harmful, and they populate our intestines and make vitamin K (blood coagulation, calcium adsorption, etc.).

How are bacteria able to produce new strains other than mutations?
Q. Bacteria reproduce by binary fission, which is an asexual process. How are bacteria able to produce new strains other than mutations?

A. They are able to take up plasmids, small circular pieces of DNA, from the environment or they can exchange plasmids during conjugation (the closest thing bacteria have to sex).

How in anyway is Free Health Care unconstitutional?

Q. Serious were in the US constitution does it say no free health care? I want to know?

A. Who said there was going to be free health care.

What are some reasons as to why reconstructing and giving out free health care to all citizens is bad?
Q. What are some reasons as to why reconstructing and giving out free health care to all citizens is bad?

A. It doesn't work: some are told to die, we all go bankrupt:
Canadian doc on UHC:
"...Another sign of transformation: Canadian doctors, long silent on the health-care systems problems, are starting to speak up. Last August, they voted Brian Day president of their national association. A former socialist who counts Fidel Castro as a personal acquaintance, Day has nevertheless become perhaps the most vocal critic of Canadian public health care, having opened his own private surgery center as a remedy for long waiting lists and then challenged the government to shut him down. This is a country in which dogs can get a hip replacement in under a week, he fumed to the New York Times, and in which humans can wait two to three years.

And now even Canadian governments are looking to the private sector to shrink the waiting lists. Days clinic, for instance, handles workers-compensation cases for employees of both public and private corporations. In British Columbia, private clinics perform roughly 80 percent of government-funded diagnostic testing. In Ontario, where fealty to socialized medicine has always been strong, the government recently hired a private firm to staff a rural hospitals emergency room.

This privatizing trend is reaching Europe, too. Britains government-run health care dates back to the 1940s. Yet the Labour Partywhich originally created the National Health Service and used to bristle at the suggestion of private medicine, dismissing it as Americanizationnow openly favors privatization. Sir William Wells, a senior British health official, recently said: The big trouble with a state monopoly is that it builds in massive inefficiencies and inward-looking culture. Last year, the private sector provided about 5 percent of Britains nonemergency procedures; Labour aims to triple that percentage by 2008. The Labour government also works to voucherize certain surgeries, offering patients a choice of four providers, at least one private. And in a recent move, the government will contract out some primary care services, perhaps to American firms such as UnitedHealth Group and Kaiser Permanente.

Swedens government, after the completion of the latest round of privatizations, will be contracting out some 80 percent of Stockholms primary care and 40 percent of its total health services, including one of the citys largest hospitals. Since the fall of Communism, Slovakia has looked to liberalize its state-run system, introducing co-payments and privatizations. And modest market reforms have begun in Germany: increasing co-pays, enhancing insurance competition, and turning state enterprises over to the private sector (within a decade, only a minority of German hospitals will remain under state control). Its important to note that change in these countries is slow and gradualmarket reforms remain controversial. But if the United States was once the exception for viewing a vibrant private sector in health care as essential, it is so no longer."

Hillarycare exists in Taxachusetts with only 6.5 million people:
"Massachusetts announced that spending on its health care plan would increase by $400 million in 2008, a cost expected to be borne largely by taxpayers."

Article explains why CA couldn't get it off ground.

Medicare is touted by the uninformed as THE solution:
In the US, Medicare is going bankrupt. In 1998, Medicare premiums were $43.80 and in 2008 will be $96.40--up 120%. "Medigap" insurance is common because of the 20% co-pay required for service. Medicare HMOs are common because they reduce that burden without an extra charge in many cases. HOWEVER, many procedures which used to have no or a low co-pay NOW cost the full 20% for the HMO Medicare patient. ALSO the prescription coverage they tended to offer has been REDUCED in many cases to conform to the insane "donut hole" coverage of the feds. Doctors are leaving Medicare because of the low and slow pay AND because the crazy government wants to "balance" their Ponzi scheme on the backs of doctors.
"That dark cloud lurking over the shoulder of every Massachusetts physician is Medicare. If Congress does not act, doctors' payments from Medicare will be cut by about 5 percent annually, beginning next year through 2012, creating a financial hailstorm that would wreak havoc with already strained practices.

Cumulatively, the proposed cuts represent a 31 percent reduction in Medicare reimbursement. If the cuts are adjusted for practice-cost inflation, the American Medical Association says Medicare payment rates to physicians in 2013 would be less than half of what they were in 1991."

What Canada Tells Us About Government Health Care
By Doug Wilson
Monday, February 25, 2008

Americans may not agree on much between now and November, but we have reached a consensus about the importance of at least one issue: health care.
In a recent study by the Pew Research Center, 76 percent of registered voters said that health care was very important to their vote. Democrats ranked health care their most important issue; Independents slotted it as their second most important issue. Republicans, meanwhile, positioned health care as more important than social issues such as abortion, gay marriage and stem cell research.
This public concern has prompted political actionor at least political posturing. It seems every politician has a plan to solve our health care woes. For Democrats, the silver bullet remains universal, government-funded coverage. Both Senators Obama and Clinton have proposed regulation and tax-heavy programs to offer cradle-to-grave health care for Americans.
Ironically, these proposals come at a time when some of our other entitlementsSocial Security and Medicarestand on the brink of collapse. For example, most experts agree that Social Security will be entirely bankrupt by 2041, and that the system will show serious financial strain as early as 2017. If a business faced such dire financial straits it would cut costs, but the government continues its perpetual spending spree.
Before we allow the government to burden us with another mammoth entitlement program, however, we might well consider the plight of countries currently employing socialized medicine. And we need not look very far for an example. Since the 1960s, Canada has operated a system of socialized medicine, while also forbidding the private sector from insuring medically necessary care.
The verdict: Canadians pay more for their health care and get less. Thats according to the Fraser Institute, an independent research and educational organization based in Canada. Frasers recently released study, Paying More, Getting Less: Measuring the Sustainability of Government Health Spending in Canada calls our attention to the painful realities of government-funded health care.
How, exactly, do Canadians pay more for their health care? Taxes, naturallyand higher and higher ones at that, for there is no other way to maintain such an enormous entitlement. Consider that by 2035, six of 10 Canadian provinces will spend half of their taxpayer-generated revenue on health-related expenses.
In slow economic times, health spending tends to exceed revenue. The government responds by raising existing taxes or creating new ones; to do otherwise would lead to the neglect of other government programs like schools and roads.
By restricting the market, public health care programs create long waits for specialists and often prevent patients from pursuing new treatments. Indeed, the median wait times between a referral from a family or general doctor to a specialist for further treatment increased significantly in every Canadian province between 1997 and 2006. For many treatments and procedures, Canadians are forced to wait twice as long as doctors believe is medically advisable.
Canadas restrictive policies have also reduced the number of various types of health professionals, limited the availability of advanced equipment and severely restricted the prescription drug choices. Consider that even after Health Canada certifies a new drug, it takes over a year for that drug to actually reach the patients who need it. Between 2004 and 2005, it took an average of 439 days for provinces to receive reimbursement for drugs, forcing patients to wait months for necessary medications.
The list could go on, but it need not. We get the picture. The question is: What are we going to do about it?
The answer lies in the marketplace. Among the more promising proposals currently before Congress is the Health Care Choice Act. The Act would allow individuals to compare and purchase health insurance across state lines. This is a very important, if often misunderstood, way of reducing health care costs. Heres a quick primer: Because health care is primarily regulated at the state level, states can force providers to cover services and procedures (e.g., chiropractic care or fertility treatments) regardless of necessity or patient demand. Insurance companies then pass these higher costs along to every consumer, regardless of whether they want or need coverage for such procedures.
A more efficient system would allow individuals to select the health care plans of their choice. Such a plan recognizes that a 20 year old male typically has very different medical needs than a 60 year old woman. Freeing consumers to select a health care plan that meets their needs and budget, even if it is in a different state, is a common sense solution that would ease the budget crunch facing man

What are arguments AGAINST immigration and free health care?
Q. It for my critical thinking class. My topic is should illegal immigrants be provided with free health care. I'm against it so what are some arguments that are against giving illegal immigrants free health care?

A. This is so bizarre. Nobody is proposing that illegal immigrants get free health care. Make something up, it makes as much sense.

But think. You profit from work done by people who get paid illegally low wages and no benefits. The government, in collusion with big business, has worked hard for a generation to permit them to come here so wages for citizens would be depressed. °)

How much lemon juice should be added to a gallon of water to prevent browning of potatoes?

Q. How much lemon juice should be added to a gallon of water to prevent browning of potatoes? Thanks for your help!

A. Browning in potatoes, bananas, apples, mushrooms and many other fruits and veggies are caused by enzymes called polyphenoloxidase. Keeping potatoes submerged in water will work for a while as it greatly lessens the available amount of oxygen the enzymes require to cause browning, however it will not eliminate the browning process altogether.

Lemon juice works great for preventing enzymatic browning of apples, pears and bananas, as it actually kills the enzymes by altering the ph level on the surface of the fruit. While submerging potatoes in water will greatly reduce enzymatic browning, the potatoes still yellow a little bit. Peel a fresh potato and compare it to one soaked in water overnight and you will see the soaked potato has indeed darkened slightly. If you want to prevent the discoloration entirely, you can dissolve 2 TBL of salt per gallon of water and this will keep your potatoes nice and white. Remember to rinse the potatoes before using them.

What is the difference between juice and juice cocktail?
Q. I accidentally bought some juice cocktail the other day and am now wondering if I should drink it like normal juice or save it to use when I'm making cocktails at a get together. When I think of cocktails I think of drinks. Am I wrong? Is it just another type of juice?

A. Juice cocktail usually means it is not 100% juice but a blend that contains juice in some proportion..such as 10% to 50%.
A product cannot label itself as juice unless it is 100% juice and therefore calls itself a "juice drink" or a juice cocktail"
Sometimes they will state what percentage of juice is contained in the beverage. You can still drink and enjoy it...just be cognizant that it is not 100% juice and likely contains sweeteners

How long does fresh juice keep its vitamin and mineral content?
Q. I recently started juicing. My question is how long does the fresh juice keep its vitamins and minerals intact. Must I drink it immediately or can I keep it for a day or two?

A. Depends on the juice. Wheat-grass is supposed to be drunk immediately, while others seem to keep well in the fridge.

You would probably have to look it up on google for specific juices.

How does lemon juice reduce the burn of hot spices?
Q. I've heard that lemon juice helps the burn of hot spices such as peppers, and I've seen lemon juice in condiment packages at restaurants that serve spicy food. Is it a chemical reaction?
@ Naomi: What you're saying makes sense. Reaching into my memory, I seem to recall something from Chemistry that goes along the lines of "like dissolves like". Water, being polar, will dissolve other polar substances like ionic compounds (e.g., NaCl) but not non-polar substances such as oil.

So, if the substance that causes the burning is an oil, it would make sense that other similar substances would dissolve it better than water. I rarely drink alcohol, so milk would be a better alternative.

Thank you :-)

A. A lot of people seem to think that water helps but it makes the sensation worse simply because oil and water don't mix. The fiery spices in the foods are oil-based, and thus mix readily with the cooking oil and/or natural juices the food simmers in. When you eat the stuff, the oil coats your tongue and throat, and for complicated molecular reasons repels all efforts to wash it down with water. Water doesn't actually make the burning sensation worse, but by eliminating other distracting tastes I suppose we might say it purifies the agony.

So what does work? Logic would suggest two approaches: dilutants (more oil) and solvents (such as alcohol). So indeed it is the reaction in the mixtures between the oil/juices coated on your tongue and the liquid consumed after ward that reduces or increases the burn of hot spices. The same thing happens with lemon juice also as most solvents and dilutants high in citric acid work well at reducing the burn of hot spices. However there are many others better than lemon juice that are more efficient than reducing the burn. Best dilutant I know of is milk, which generally works like a charm. Alcoholic beverages seam to work quite well too.

I hope this answered your question.

What do you see as the major differences between a single-provider health insurance plan and private health?

Q. *private health insurance

A. Private health insurance is more cost effective, and more cautious about fraud and corruption, than public (single-payor) health insurance. Fraud rates in Medicare and Medicaid are at LEAST four times higher - after all, they don't CARE about the bottom line, and they aren't paying claims out of their own money.

Can a Canadian citizen (with a work visa in the US) purchase private health Insurance in the US?
Q. My husband has a Visa to work in the US, and we are looking in to private health insurance. Does anyone know if there are any plans out there that will cover Canadian citizens in the US.

A. You will have to get insurance there. Six months out of Canada and you no longer have provincial coverage, with at least a three month wait list when you return.

You just buy a plan. Most people have private plans there so you'll have plenty of choce.

I have private health insurance and insurance from work?
Q. I have private health insurance from blue cross blue shield, I also get blue cross blue-shield from the work I do for the state. If I was to use the insurance from my work would it be a conflict with the insurance I privately have? I was told that they would cancel each other out and I would lose my private insurance. Is this true??? I don't really want to lose my private insurance for health and security reasons but I also don't want to keep paying more if i don't have to in the long run.

A. In most cases, you are paying too much for your coverage. You generally are best off just getting the bcbs plan from your employer. However, they can work together in some instances. If one is used as primary and then the other can pick up the co-pays at the doctor's office and other things. I know one person who has a situation like this. However, this person has coverage from their own employer and their spouse's employer. Their plan pays as primary, the other picks up everything except the annual deductible. Since the plans are written differently from each other, if they used the spouse's plan as primary, then their own plan would pick up nothing as secondary. Since both plans are through the employers and that person has a lot of medical expenses, it saves money to have both plans on that one person. Since the spouse has few medical expenses, they only have one plan on that spouse. In most cases, your private medical insurance is going to cost you more to carry than the out-of-pocket maximum on the plan with the employer. In most cases, you would do well to carry only one plan.

What is the difference between metastasized brain cancer and cancer that started in the brain?

Q. My mother had lung cancer a year ago and although it has not returned, she now has a tumor in her brain the size of a dime. It is cancerous .... so what is the prognosis and what is the difference between this type of brain cancer (where it originated in the lungs) and brain cancer that originiates in the brain. Also, what is the prognosis?

A. Cancer originating in a particular organ for the first time is called Primary neoplasm.

Metastasis is its secondary spread through blood or lymph.

Prognosis really depends on histological type of the cancer but metastasis generally requires more aggressive treatment in the form of chemo & radio because it is wide-spread.

My best wishes are with your mother and you as her family in the battle against this cancer.

How would a Aries female and Cancer male as roommates work out?
Q. The cancer guy has a virgo moon and gemini venus
Im not sure about the aries girl

They are both in college and planning to room together and theyve been friends for years. I know that the Cancer is kind of wild and likes to party but the aries is more reserved mostly due to her nationality (chinese)

A. I'm a cancer and my room mate is an Aries and we get along really well. We respect each other. I have an Aries Mars though and she has a Cancer Mars. I do not get pushed around by anyone and I think she is less aggressive than most Aries, so it works.

How can a thyroid cancer metastasize into only one part of the body?
Q. My brother had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer and his cancer managed to metastasize into his liver. My question is, how is it that cancer in one part of the body can metastasize into one part of the body but not the surrounding areas? Or is it just a matter of time?

A. It happens that way cancer.I have found that the liver is much more susceptible to mestatization than other organs because of its functional ties to soo many organs as well as its role in the the body.if he has been treated with chemotherapy or radiation its likely to get the brunt of the effects because of its clean up function.....hopefully in trying to manage it the doctors won't set off a series of mestizaton on the other organs due to exposure of more chemotherapy agents due to the livers reduced function.
I hope you and your family the best.

What are the symptoms of cancer? How can someone diagnose if he has cancer?
Q. Just wondering what the symptoms of cancer are? How can a person recongnize if he/she might have cancer? Is there any way you can tell in general?

What instructions/advices/recommendations could you give?

Additional info would be helpful!

Thanks!
What should I do if I want to make sure I don't have cancer?

A. There are over 200 different types of cancer. Cancer is a progressive disease which means that it starts out very tiny, a microscopic cell . . and starts to grow. When it is small there are rarely any symptoms at all. The body does not recognize a malignant cell as being dangerous or any different that any of the other millions of cells within the body. In fact the body will nurture the cancer cell in the same way it takes care of the rest of the body . . and make it a nice healthy cancer cell. Eventually the cell grows into a nodule or tumor and if it is not bothering any vital structures or nerves . . again, no one will feel anything. The cancer will continue to grow and be nourished by the body (just as the body takes care of organs, bones, skin, tissue it also takes care of cancer tumors). Tumors at this point can start to grow their own blood vessels . . if a patient is lucky they will notice symptoms of fatigue or unusual weight loss as the body continues to nourish the new tumor at the expense of other organs.

In general, though, there are very, very few warning signs that someone has a malignancy until the cancer is advanced. One of the only warning signs a young person might have that something is wrong is to notice an unusual lump or bump that seems to be growing. Otherwise, most cancers are found by chance.

The only recommendation I could give anyone is to remain as healthy as you can, diet, exercise, don't smoke or drink excessively, avoid excessive exposure to carcinogens, and stay healthy. This won't prevent all cancers (you might stop smoking, but later get a bone cancer anyway . . but at least you didn't get lung cancer) , but it will cut down on the risks . . . Mostly though staying healthy and fit will help you fight cancer should you ever get it. The healthier you are the stronger you'll be when you have treatment. It makes a difference to not have any secondary health issues when fighting this monster.

What causes hemorrhoids and what are good hemorrhoids treatments?

Q. Help i think i have hemorrhoids. I've been having bloody stool and anal itching. I asked a friend of mine and they said i might have hemorrhoids. Wtf how would i get hemorrhoids, is that normal. What causes hemorrhoids and what are some hemorrhoids treatments? Do i have to go to the doctor?

A. Hemorrhoids are more common than you think. They can be cause by a number of things such as poor dieting and low fiber intake. I believe the most common reason people get hemorrhoids is straining during stool, this causes extreme pressure to the blood vessels in the anal canal and therefor causing swelling which forms hemorrhoids. Usually hemorrhoids are not life threatening so will not likely have to go to the doctor unless the pain is to unbearable. Some people have had to get hemorrhoids surgically removed. As far as hemorrhoids treatments there are many over the counter treatments that can offer temporary relief such as creams, ointments and suppositories. These will offer relief and help prevent flare ups. You can learn more about hemorrhoids treatments and recommendations at http://accesshealthprosperityblog.com/2011/10/07/hemorrhoids-treatments-and-recommendations/

What are good available hemorrhoids home remedies ?
Q. I am suffering from hemorrhoids from last 1 year. Some times I get cured and again I start blood poop.
I have used some home remedies for hemorrhoids but it is not happy.

A. the best solution to treat Hemorrhoids is to start as soon as possibly . There are a wide variety of natural remedies available which can be applied to treat hemorrhoids so you can stop them from progressing and getting so bad that the only way to deal with them is surgery. These remedies are completely safe and you may find them to be much more effective than traditional medicine as many of them actually cure the problem instead of just treating the symptoms.
-One favorite used by many people is that of applying banana peel to the area.
-Fill up your bathtub with warm water and add salt. When it is ready, just lay in the salty water for a few minutes

What is the best herbal treatment for hemorrhoids?
Q. I have external hemorrhoids, have had them for about 1.5 years now, and I am just doing some personal research on what the best hemorrhoids treatment is. I've read a lot and I've boiled it down to a few. Any suggestions? I really want to get rid of these external hemorrhoids forever so please share your experiences!

A. Below are some of the most effective herbal ingredients for treating hemorrhoids:

1. Witch Hazel
It is basically an astringent that is commonly contained in ointments and creams for relieving hemorrhoids. Witch hazel is a shrub, and the bark and leaf of this shrub is used for reducing inflammation and swelling of external hemorrhoids.

2. Horse Chestnut
Horse chestnut seed has countless benefits and it mainly helps in relieving certain diseases that involves the veins. Horse chestnut extract is used these days for treating hemorrhoids. It contains aescin, a special ingredient that helps in reducing pain and inflammation, and also improves the elasticity of the vein, while strengthening the walls of the veins and improving the tone too. It further helps in improving micro vascular circulation and also lessens fluid retention and swelling.

3. Butchers Broom
Butchers broom is an effective herb that belongs to the family of asparagus, and is also used as a vegetable. It contains one of the most crucial ingredients called ruscogenins that helps in narrowing the blood vessels, reduces swelling and inflammation, and also strengthens the walls of veins.

4. Pilewort
Pilewort is an ancient English herb that helps in treating the symptoms of hemorrhoids. It is used in the form of a tincture, and is applied directly on to the external hemorrhoid. However, it can be consumed as tea also.Pilewort has certain side effects, though so keep this in mind if you are using it and stop and see a doctor if you feel any negative side effects.

5. Cranesbill
It is basically a geranium plant, usually wild in nature, and is native to America. It helps in treating various digestive conditions and has excellent astringent properties for treating hemorrhoids.

What should I look for in a good health plan for my wife and I?

Q. We are late twenties, married two years and really need a decent family health plan. We have no kids yet. What specific benefits/costs should I be looking at? We can probably only afford $200-$300 a month, sadly.

A. If you can find a plan through your employer, it would be the cheapest. If you are buying on your own then you will have some additional things to look at:
1. are either of you planning any major surgeries or health events (pregnancy)
2. how often do you typically go to the doctor (1? 10?)
3. Do you need specialist care (ob? specialists?)
4. How much money do you have available in an emergency
5. Any routine medications (birth control? allergy? special condition?)

Plans will have info such as co-pays (what you pay when you go in) and then also things like co-insurance. Pay attention to these as it will help you identify how much money you will be paying in addition to your health insurance.

Some people pick plans that have higher upfront costs (copays, drugs, etc) with lower monthly costs because they rarely go to the doc and it is cheaper to pay those costs out of pocket. Others find insurance that is more per month but the day to day is cheaper.

Read the fine print- will previous conditions be a problem? Is there a limit to how much the insurance will pay? Is there a drug plan.

Good luck.

What should the fees be for Cadillac health plans?
Q. People who have Cadillac health plans will pay more to the government in fees. What should the scale be?

And how shall we exempt union workers who have Cadillac plans?
But iris, how do we exempt unions from this supposed tax...because it is not a tax, it is a fee.

A. The fact that union workers will be exempt (for a period of time) smacks of favoritism for that crowd. Why should they get off - and not me? No way. There will be lawsuits by the truckloads when that goes down. None of this will come out like the dems think it will. So many people think it just means free health care - when in fact it just means that the gov't is REQUIRING you to BUY health care (unless you are poor and it will be GIVEN to you!) There is so much to motivate one to being poor in this country! Anyway - the fees should be NOTHING! Don't TAX my right to buy a great health plan (I work very hard to do so!) taking money from me to pay for those that don't!

Does your corporations Self-funded Health Plan put a price tag on your head that may get you laid off?
Q. A majority of large corporations now self fund their health plans. Smaller companies, some with fewer than 100 employees, are moving to this trend too. This means the corporation you work for is paying for you and your families medical costs.

Anyone else concerned that this trend is both an invasion of privacy and puts a target on your back if you or any one of your family members has serious medical bills?

You're running XYZ, Inc and employ John Doe for an annual salary of $75,000. You provide a medical benefit of $10,000 and John picks up the other $5000 of the annual premium. With 401K matching, & other benefits, he cost XYZ, Inc. $100,000 a year. John's wife, Jane Doe has a chronic illness... costing about $50,000 annually.

XYZ, Inc. knows John is costing them $150K, not $100K. Does John have a target on his back?

A. I wouldn't think so as the insurance fund is likely administered by a third party. But, you can bet there is a move to keep you health, wealthy and wise as it is a benefit to the bottom line.

If you want to have insurance without limits, you will have to pay through the nose to get it. Your company has found this out and that is why they are self insured now.

They are simply playing the odds that everybody will not get drastically sick at the same time. If they do, it will bankrupt the fund, not the company.

How can a person switch health plans when they are sick?
Q. Please help! My uncle, who is in his fifties and has kidney problems (stones) and other issues, has doctors who suck because he is forced to stay with his crappy health plan. I won't name it, but his doctors are indifferent and haven't helped him and he can't afford to see another doctor. He also is discouraged and is too upset to haggle with insurance people, so he just allows himself to suffer.

So, I want to help. What can he do to eventually switch plans (legally) when he has been with one for so long and is currently sick? Every insurance carrier will not take a new customer if that person is sick (pre-existing condition clause) so a sick person is effectiively screwed. He has nothing terminal and does not have diabetes.

Please! If there are any insiders who wish to earn some good karma and relieve the pain of someone who has given up, now would be a great time!

A. Look for something in the "naturopathic" area. The health industry is changing. Stanardized medicine doctors' don't care, they get paid whether they are showing your uncle any progress or not...and they push PILLS instead of getting to the root problem. Your uncle's body is out of balance.
My sister is graduating in May for her certification as a CERTIFIED NUTRITION THERAPIST.
Start your uncle on a new path for his health.
NO PROCESSED FOODS OF ANY KIND. Cut back on red meat too. Organic apple juice could help with the stones. Also get him off of ALL sugar and dairy products. The white bag of sugar off the grocery shelf is bleached. Splenda, also a chlorinated product. If you'd like an "education" about the food industry in this country go to a health food store and they can lead you in the right direction. INCLUDING a referral for a CNT or naturopathic doctor. Just don't let him give up he's young.
"To relieve existing stones, a GINGER COMPRESS should be applied over the kidneys continuously, especially during a kidney stone attack or strong pain. Plenty of hot fluids may be taken especially hot BANCHA TWIG TEA, to help ease the obstruction and flush out the stone."pg 274
If your Uncle is serious about what he wants, relief from pain and kidney stone episodes...he will be willing to make the CHANGES that will literally save his life.
I have been a diabetic since 1992. I managed it pretty well or so I have always thought. Well I went through some changes in 2003 and my doctor never in questioned me about what I was doing with my diet she just added insulin shots to my life and before I knew it I put on 85 lbs I didn't ASK for....when I found out that the insulin was the direct result I asked the nurse how do I get off of this. I made changes in my diet and weaned myself off the shots within about 4 months. I wasted no time doing this. I still had two diabetic pills I was taking and I did such a great job I got off Avandia as well (major side effect---wt gain.) My sister and I started seeing a CNT 11/06 and we are currently taking a protocol of BIOTICS and I've lost 20 lbs just since January 07.
Let me explain it this way. When you see people that are obese and you think--wow that persons' a p-i-g or not caring about themselves. You can start looking at them in a new light. It's true some people do overeat...But also true is that the body is completely out balance. Their body is not handling the chemicals and processed food this country is making for us to comsume. They are full of toxins. And when the body can't get rid of them it stores the toxins in the fat of the body remaining trapped there.
Let's look at a simple product like: oreo cookies...yeah there yummy....But are you aware that the company that makes them, makes them to be ADDICTIVE.. ? It's true. When my sister completes her training I'm going to read everyone of her text books. Please, Please get your uncle the help he needs through a CNT. Best Wishes for you both in good health.
P.S. I quoted a source but have discovered a CNT the best way to go. I got the book to look at recipes etc..

How much blood is taken for a thyroid blood test?

Q. I have to get a blood test to check my thyroid, I think it's a full thyroid panel or something like that. I want to know if it is a lot of blood/many tubes of blood. I tend to pass out if it's a lot of blood, so I want to know. Thanks.

A. Probably two small tubes but it's no big deal. I have had blood taken for thyroid tests for many years, and many more tests for other matters. Try looking at something else and concentrating on that and it will be over in one minute or less.

How long do blood thinners usually take to clear a blood clot in the lungs?
Q. How long do blood thinners usually take to clear a blood clot in the lungs?

A. Blood thinners don't clear the clot. You're body does. The blood thinners just prevent the clot from getting any bigger.

It can actually take quite a while for your body to break up the clot, but the patient usually leaves the hospital after their blood levels stabilize on oral anti-coagulants (blood thinners.)

What does red blood cells carry differently to plasma?
Q. I know red blood cells carries oxygen and this chemical is called haemaglobin but what else do red blood cell carry and plasma in the blood? I know they carry vital substances but I don't know which one carries which.

Please help! Thank you!

A. The hemoglobin in red blood cells binds to both O2 and CO2 for gas exchange. O2 is taken to the tissues. About 10% of CO2 binds to hemoglobin and is unloaded in the lungs for exhalation.

Plasma contains water and plasma proteins. The plasma proteins are fibrin for clotting, globulins for antibodies, and albumin. The plasma proteins are important for setting up a plasma-colloid osmotic pressure, which is a force important in net filtration in the kidneys and for moving water into the circulatory system.

How long after giving blood should I wait to get blood work done?
Q. I am a member of the local Blood Bank, and they have called me to give my donation. I am scheduled to get blood work done soon after. How long do I need to wait after I give blood, to get my blood work done?
I am planning on donating this week. My appointment for blood work is next week. Would there be an issue with my blood work since my donation is close to when I am having blood work done?

A. There should be no problem donating blood followed by routine lab tests. Quantitative hematology tests such as hemoglobin/hematocrit may be slightly affected. Otherwise, most lab tests will not be affected. Thank your for such a generous gift.

What is a microbial disease that is currently targeted for eradication, and what countries are targeted?

Q. I cant find a disease that is CURRENTLY targeted for eradiction. Can anyone help?

A. Locust - Welcome to ANSWERS. The only microbial disease that has ever been eradicated from the earth is smallpox in the past decades. This is a microbial (virus) disease, The one that is NOW targeted most for eradication is another viral disease = poliomyelitis (commonly called "polio"). The World Health Organization had originally set the year 2000 to eliminate this virus from th earth by a program of immunizations. The effort almost succeeded, but polio still exists in about 4 countries in the world: India, Nigeria, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Efforts still continue to eradicate polio.

What's the difference between an endemic disease and an epidemic disease?
Q. And can a disease be classified as both
Please explain your answer and give some examples.

A. An endemic disease is one that is continuously present in the population, often because there is a non-human reservoir for the microbe that causes it. Examples would be malaria (in tropical countries) or histoplasmosis (in America).
An epidemic disease is one that spreads in a sudden, massive surge within a population that is largely without immune protection. An obvious example is influenza, that tends to cause epidemics each time a new virus strain emerges.
An example of a disease that maybe endemic or epidemic is cholera - it can be endemic locally in areas with poor sanitation but can spread violently if sanitation breaks down in disaster areas.

What is more just: rationing health care based upon bureaucratic decisions or ability to pay?

Q. Both socialzed and free market health care ration health care.

In socialized health care, care is rationed based upon bureaucratic decisions.
In "free market" health care, care is rationed based upon the ability of the person to pay.

Which is more just?
Which is more just for a child?

A. Depends on the perspective. The "socialized" (please use in quotation marks) perspective is that users of health care are the community as a whole; thus, 'just' is defined as minimizing the losing individuals. "Free market's" views are that the users are individuals or groups of individuals; thus, 'just' is defined as maximizing the number of individuals 'satisfied.'

From both common political and ethical perspective, a child is often unable to contribute to the discussion of 'individuals to be lost' in "socialized health care" or 'user satisfaction' in the "free market." Given the assumptions that pediatric care is satisfactory for most children, "socialized health care" is more just because the intrinsic cost-of-life-saved would then be higher even though some children would fall through the cracks. HOWEVER, given the assumption above and also that the income difference between the richest and poorest people is minimal, the "free market" is more just because parents can decide what is most 'satisfactory' without too much undue financial burden.

What health care problem should I address in a statistics assignment?
Q. I have to make a power point about a health care problem for a statistics class and include a frequency table, which means I need actual numbers, not percentages as most statistic information is portrayed. Does anyone know what would be a good health-related topic where I could find actual numbers easily? Or any good websites for health-related data?

A. The Robert Woods Johnson Foundation is a research think tank. They have all kinds of references to interesting research around health care and health reform. With a little digging, you may be able to contact some of the researchers.

WebMD is another useful source for anything and everything health care.

How will health care be affected by legalizing marijuana?
Q. Hey everyone. I need help on answering this question: How will health care access, cost, and quality be affected by the passage or defeat of a bill legalizing marijuana. The bill is AB 390, but i just need some answers on the affect of health care by legalizing marijuana or not. I've done some research but I need a little more. Thanks.

A. If marijuana was made legal and the government produced and taxed it, the revenue could cover a huge portion of the health care budget. The government could mass produce many different types of weed and at such a low cost because the 'danger' aspect would be non-existent; then then they could tax it heavily and make it cost the same it does now plus make billions a year that could be used to support health care. Not only that but it would save the DEA and many police forces and other government agencies billions just in time spent and effort wasted arresting harmless weed smokers. In New York city in 2008 it cost them 90 million dollars to arrest and detain people possessing minor amounts of weed and I can think of many better uses for that kind of money, one of them being health care.

There wouldn't be more people using if it was made illegal because if people want to smoke weed they are going to do so anyways, but I major difference could be that less young people would smoke it because if it was legal it would be a less 'rebellious' drug.

Instead the USA has treated marijuana the same way they treat most things; by declaring war on it, hence the War on Drugs.

25 Oct 2009 ... taxing marijuana could be a way to pay for health care. ... How will we legalize that? This is a bad thing for the government to throw up ...
